Susan Brockman and Wanda Goldsmith meet with Merissa Koller from Kodiak Cooperative to learn about healthy cooking and eating.

With Veterans Day on Saturday and the center being closed on Friday in honor of Veterans Day, the senior center will honor all veterans on Thursday with a free lunch at noon. The menu that day is a roast beef dinner. We are proud to honor any veteran over 60 and thank you for your service. Please join us at the center for a tribute to veterans and a delicious lunch. The center will be closed on Friday, November 10, in honor of the actual Veterans Day, which is Saturday, November 11. If you need a ride to the center to enjoy this luncheon event, please call KATS at (907) 486-8308.

One of the biggest and most enjoyable events at the senior center is the annual “Seniors Serving Seniors” when Kodiak High School seniors serve Thanksgiving dinner to seniors at the center. This popular event will be held Friday, November 17 at noon. For more than 30 years, this holiday event has brought together Kodiak residents to share in giving thanks and having an intergenerational celebration. This event is for people 60 and older only as dining space is tight. Be sure to come early and enjoy a delicious dinner and wonderful desserts. Call KATS at (907) 486-8308 for transportation.

The movie “Jackie’ will be shown Monday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. Exercise continues each day at the center with yoga, Tai Chi and regular exercise scheduled each day. Might be good time to get into an exercise routine as we work our way to all the upcoming holidays.

Island Cove and the center will be closed on November 23, Thanksgiving Day. Though we are closed, the center staffs volunteers that day to assure those seniors receiving home delivered meals receive one that day. American Legion prepares the meals and volunteer staff deliver those. American Legion also hosts a Thanksgiving dinner for the community that holiday.

There are several sign-up sheets at the center for upcoming December events. One is for the Chief Petty Officers Holiday Luncheon which will be held Wednesday, December 20 at the Coast Guard base. Everyone must be signed up for this event, whether you are using the Coast Guard bus or driving yourself to the base. Deadline for signing up is December 15.

If you have not signed up by that date, you will not be allowed on base to attend the luncheon. This event is for people 60 and older only. Call the center to sign up.

Other holiday events will be posted in the upcoming December newsletter.
