Kodiak’s Trevor Dunbar won his second national title on Saturday — his first in cross country.
Dunbar, a freshman at the University of Portland, breezed to victory in the USA Cross Country National Championships junior race in Spokane, Wash.
With the victory, Dunbar qualifies for IAAF World Cross Country Championships as a member of the USA national team in Bydgoszcz, Poland on March 28.
Dunbar covered the 8-kilometer course in 24 minutes, .04 seconds — six seconds faster than runner-up Walter Schafer of Centennial College.
Dunbar went out hard early and was able to hold the pace throughout averaging a 4:50 mile pace.
“There were a bunch of spectators around the course telling me the distance behind me and that was real helpful,” Dunbar said on the USATF Website. “I was never too worried because I knew I had the lead a little bit, still feeling like I had a gear left.”
The field consisted of 39 runners on a sunny day in eastern Washington.
“It was a beautiful day, with the sunshine,” Dunbar said. “Footing was good. When I think of Spokane at this time of year I was thinking real cold so I was happy to get to the race and know that the weather was good.”
