Undefeated, so what.

Kodiak handed Soldotna its first volleyball loss of the season in the worst opportune time for the Stars and the best opportune time for the Bears — in the opening-round of the Northern Lights Conference Tournament.

Kodiak won 25-21, 25-17, 13-15, 25-22 Thursday afternoon at Wasilla High School.

Kodiak advances to play Palmer in a semifinal match today at 5 p.m. The winner clinches a trip to the 4A state tournament and a berth into Saturday’s championship match.

The loser drops to the consolation bracket for a 9 a.m. game on Saturday.

Palmer beat Kenai in its opening-round match 25-20, 25-12, 26-24.

In other conference action, Colony defeated Homer 25-12, 25-14, 25-20 and Skyview beat Wasilla 25-16, 18-25, 21-25, 25-16, 15-8.

Colony plays Skyview in the other semifinal tonight, while Kenai plays Soldotna and Homer plays Wasilla in loser-out matches today.

Soldotna, the top seed from the South Division, was 16-0 heading into the match, while Kodiak, the fourth seed from the North Division, was 6-7.

“The girls are ecstatic. Absolutely ecstatic.” Kodiak coach Rick Carman said.

Senior Mara Yatsik led the way with eight kills and 19 digs. Rhonda Yamat and Joyce Quiliza each added five kills, while Yamat tallied 20 digs and Quiliza 19 digs and three aces.

Emily Horn led the team with 23 digs and 16 assists.

Carman said the fourth set was a see-saw affair, but the Bears were able to break a 22-all tie to pull off the upset.

“They were upset, of course,” Carman said. “It is said to see. At the same time we did our job.”

The top three teams advance to next week’s state tournament.
