In a previous letter I described how Duncan Fields abandoned a motion that could have led to justice for the crew and hired skippers. Later on, it was brought back up by Bill Twiet of Washington state, but was voted down by the “Alaskan” members. What was that all about?
I checked into Twiet and didn’t learn much except he’s not known as one who would go off on tangents if his governor didn’t approve. He serves at her pleasure. So why would she tell him to do that? One person told me she did it because she’s a liberal Democrat who believes in the rights of ordinary working folks.
I’ll admit it’s an optimistic interpretation, that Gov. Christine Gregoire would still have those feelings after all she had to go through getting where she is. But I’m keeping my fingers crossed, she’d be doing the entire coast a huge favor.
And, more bad news for the bad guys is coming from Maine and North Carolina. The fishermen can’t fish, too many dogfish sharks, just like those taking over Kodiak waters. There are remedies, but National Marine Fisheries Service is entirely wrapped up in privatizing their resources and can’t be bothered. Apparently the folks there have figured out a way to seriously bother NMFS.
Whether it prompted the resignation of their No. 1 figurehead Bill Hogarth is yet unknown. Meanwhile, the infestation of dogfish in our archipelago’s largest bay, Marmot, has gone from 10 percent to 80 percent in two short years. Commercial catches are way, way down. The fishermen continue to remove the cod and halibut from the water and tenderly releases the dogfish, as per Hogarth’s law. What is wrong with this picture?
Things to know about dogfish: A good share of the world eats it for fish and chips, and the fish has been known to wipe out crab stocks.
