Now is time to clean up elections
Article published on Friday, November 16th, 2007

Letter to the editor

Alaskans for Clean Elections is a statewide grassroots organization which believes the time has come to change how state elections are financed. We think that this change is necessary to help return political power to the hands of individual Alaskans, and will positively enhance our state democratic process.

Corporate money in politics is one of the biggest challenges facing our democracy. Recent criminal trials of state legislators and others have emphasized the fact that our political process has been held hostage by big money and special interests for some time. The state may have lost as much as a billion dollars in revenues because of corruption during last year’s oil tax legislation.

Clean, publicly financed election campaigns create more equal opportunity for voters and candidates, independent of their financial means. Also, this is a citizen issue, and should be above partisan bickering. It’s an issue supported by all sides of the political spectrum (ex-Gov. Wally Hickel has donated money to us).

More info can be found by googling “Alaskans for Clean Elections” if you have Internet access, or contact Dick Ross, 486-6428, for information or to sign up.
