Eleven teams competed in the 2007 Emerald Isle Eco-Challenge, Saturday, put on by the U.S. Coast Guard Morale, Well-being and Recreation department.
A compass and topographic map were issued to each team prior to the race for orienteering.
At each checkpoint on the course, which is known only to race officials, teams were given the latitude and longitude of their next destination and which mode to travel — foot, bike, swim or raft. Teams of four began the race at the Navy SEAL base on Spruce Cape and continued on foot to Lake Gertrude in Fort Abercrombie, where they were tasked with building a raft of sticks and a tarp.
Two members of each team donned survival suits and swam the makeshift raft and 20 pounds of rocks to another point on the lake.
Teams then retrieved bikes and rode to White Sands Beach and continued to Termination Point by foot. Teams then hopped on their bikes and rode back to Fort Abercrombie and finished at the Ram Site.
Other tasks along the route included building a fire and making smoke signals, and putting a splint on a teammate’s leg.
The number of race officials and volunteers equalled the number of participants.
The team of Andy Schroeder, Betsy Lund, Matt Theissen and Ben Cournia won with a time 4 hours and 12.42 seconds.
