The two Kodiak Special Olympics hockey teams each brought back a gold medal from their recent trip to the Anchorage games. Here are recaps of those games provided by coach Chris Provost.

Unified A division

Bears 2, Force 0

The Kodiak Bears escaped with a 2 -0 victory in a physical game over the Anchorage Force in the opening round of the Unified A Division.

The Bears’ first goal came midway through the fifth shift as forward Pam Analoak shook off her opponent to scream in a 12-footer from the right wing.

Three shifts later, forward Seth Skille took a pass off the left wing from partner Taylor Humphreys and slid in an 18-footer into the right hand corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Force 2, Bears 1

The Force avenged the opening loss to the Bears with a 2-1 overtime victory.

Anchorage opened the scoring in the sixth shift from a wicked shot off of goalie Misty Wood’s stick hand. Kodiak still trailed 1-0 going into the ninth shift. However, 25 seconds into the period Analoak evened up the score. The remaining time produced a very physical game and a tie at the end of regulation.

At the 1:38 mark in overtime, Anchorage’s Mathew Maillelle punched in a low-liner toward Kodiak goalkeeper Misty Ford. At first, it seemed Ford had stopped the shot. However, the puck flipped over her stick and dribbled on through for the winning goal.

Bears 3, Force 2

In the championship game Kodiak outlasted Anchorage 3-2 to claim the gold medal.

Kodiak was first to touch the back of the net. In the fifth shift, forward Derrick Blondin, shirking off two defenders in front of the Anchorage goal flipped the ever-elusive puck past the outstretched arms of goalie Bobby Hill Sr.

Two shifts later Blondin again provided the fireworks on his second goal of the game and a 2-0 lead.

Anchorage responded with a pair of goals to tie the score at 2-2 with 2:38 remaining.

Blondin broke up the tie with 53 seconds left on his third goal of the game.

Unified B division

Bruins 1, Mighty Ducks 0 Amy Canavan scored the winning goal to lift the Kodiak Bruins to a 1-0 victory over the Anchorage Mighty Ducks in the first Unified B Division game of the tournament.

Canavan’s strong shot from 22 feet came during the sixth shift off a nice pass from partner Maggie Yngve.

Outstanding goalie play was also a key to victory as goalies Tracy Richard and Bernie Graham combined their efforts, blocking ninety-six shots.

Bruins 2, Mighty Ducks 1

Michael Eusebio scored two goals to lead the Bruins to a 2-1 victory over the Mighty Ducks and a gold medal.

Using a sharp spin move, Eusebio zipped in a 17-footer at the 1:54 mark of the fifth shift.

Anchorage countered in the eighth shift as Patrick Thomas sizzled in a 20-footer evening the score at 1-1 and taking the game into overtime.

Eusebuio responded, scoring his second goal at the 1:48 mark off of an assist by Justin Wood.
