James Cifulleli will make it back to work after all.
Cifulleli, 48, who rescuers were trying to find since Tuesday afternoon, was found unharmed Wednesday by a passing fishing boat along Ouzinkie Narrows, police said.
At about 12:30 in the afternoon he was located by Alaska State Troopers in Ouzinkie and brought back to Kodiak.
Cifulleli’s employer, Laidlaw, called the troopers after he didn’t show up for work Tuesday.
Laidlaw’s Kodiak branch manager Scott Greenstreet said another Laidlaw employee saw Cifulleli’s pick-up truck parked at the Monashka Bay parking lot Monday. The area is a popular recreation spot.
But when Cifulleli, who is always early for work, didn’t show up Tuesday, his co-workers were concerned, Greenstreet said, and they eventually notified the troopers.
Cifulleli told troopers he spent Monday and Tuesday night outside after he was disorientated while hiking. He could not find his way back to White Sands Beach, which is adjacent to the Monashka Bay parking lot.
During a search of the area, officials found a shelter “and the word ‘LOST’ written in the sand,” said Greg Wilkinson, trooper spokesperson.
Greenstreet said Cifulleli called Laidlaw shortly after the fishing boat picked him up.
“We were definitely relieved,” Greenstreet said, adding Cifulleli plans to return to work today.
